These pages are in my 5"x7" sketch book I carry around with me. I am not following any kind of story just putting images together that make up a story of sorts.

New sketch book piece. For these I have toned the paper with gouache then inked in the drawing.

I then go back in with washes and layer, pulling off some of the paint to revel highlights.

Update

Well here is where the latest painting stands. I just got back to this one after a few days away. Still layering and changing shapes and forms. I plan to work on the hands, beard and tweak the face just a bit.

Oh and shoot a better picture when I am through with this one.

New Painting

This is a new piece I just started on. The size is 36" x 48" on canvas. The process is the same. I start with a drawing in pencil, then lay the painting in with acrylic's. The reason I use acrylics is because I like how fast you can lay in and start working with oils. After the initial lay in with the acrylics I start to build the painting up with the oil's. At this point I am still working with the masses of shape and color. Everything you see here will keep getting layered upon.

Here is an update. I still have a little more to do but for the most part it is finished.

Self Portrait

Here is one I started today. So far I have about an hour and half into it. I started with a rough drawing and then worked it in acrylic. Now I am moving into oils.

New painting

This is a new canvas I just finished building to make ready for a new painting I will be starting. The process is as follows; I cut and build all of my own stretcher bars and prime raw canvas. The priming process includes putting down a coat of rabbit skin glue then several light layers of gesso. I like the building process plus it allows me to control the surface I desire. The size is 40"x 45".

Little progress on step by step

OK here is an updated version. I got to work on it for a little while today. As you can see I moved the hat over my ear and worked the face a bit.

First of this is a bad picture. I wanted to throw something up with the progress. I will take a better shot tomorrows progress.
I only worked on this a total of a couple of hours today.
At this point I bounce around the painting working on it as a whole rather then individual pieces.

Step by step

I have been working on this today for about an hr. Here is where it stands. I added a hat and have been concentrating on the area around the eyes mostly. As i continue to work on this I will keep adding to this post.

Starting to add color. Here I keep working the drawing as I go.

A little further along.

OK here is what I am working on right now. I am working from life looking at a mirror. So far at this point I have about 5 minutes into this. I work with burnt umber and ultramarine blue. As I start to lay in my darks I will take pictures and post as I go.
